The Right Search String Makes All The Difference

The Right Search String Makes All The Difference

Or maybe books.google.com just scanned in a few thousand more books since I did a search on this topic most recently. I used the search string "furiously mad" and ended up with dozens of 19th century and early 20th century books with discussions of civil commitment laws.

As usual, these are concentrated in New England, with Massachusetts and Rhode Island's legal codes overrepresented--but I also found those of Texas, Mississippi, South Carolina, Michigan, and New York, at various points through the century. A recurring pattern in many of these commitment laws is the requirement that two judges had to approve involuntary commitment.
