New PajamasMedia Article Up

"Mandatory Training For Gun Owners: Constitutional?  Useful?"

  1. From the article: "About the only subtle safety issue with modern handguns: after you remove the magazine from a semiautomatic pistol, there is still a cartridge in the chamber. You need to rack the slide to eject that cartridge and render the gun safe. (And the manuals are very clear on this point too.)"

Most new semi-autos are equipped with a "Magazine Safety" which won't allow the gun to fire without a magazine in place, even with a round chambered.

I took the time to disable the mag safety on my carry gun, because dammit, if there's a bullet in my gun and I want to fire it, I WILL be able to fire it regardless of a control or lever that I can't reach.

Besides, it tended to scratch up my magazines. :-)

On the other hand, I suspect a fair number of AD's come from getting the order wrong and racking the slide before dropping the mag....
