Wow! A Place With McCain Signs!
Bend not only has McCain/Palin signs--it seems like it has a lot more of them than I see in the Boise area. Perhaps that's because Boise Republicans aren't enthusiastic about someone as far to the left as McCain.
But then I see this remarkable announcement from the Idaho Republican Party. They claim that Ada County Democrats are sending out this flyer that says that it is okay for Republicans to split their ticket--and suggesting that local issues are so important that Republicans should vote for Democrats for state legislature, but for McCain for President.
The Idaho Republican Party sees this as Democrats running away from Obama--and that isn't an entirely absurd characterization. But it could also be an attempt by Democrats, who know that they don't stand a ghost of a chance of carrying this state for Obama, to try and salvage something out of the election.
It does seem like a very discouraging election--but there are hints of something big planned for tomorrow's debate--something that might change the direction of the election. I've received an email that claims that Bush was even farther behind Gore in 2000 this close to the election--but I can't find anything online that confirms that claim.
There is still a chance that much of Obama's support will evaporate at the last minute, especially if McCain actually gets enough courage to pin this disaster on the Democrats (who certainly deserve most of the blame) and specifically on Obama affiliates such as ACORN (who certainly deserve considerable blame). But does McCain want to be President badly enough to be mean? I don't think so. He seems to be someone who manages to come across as a jerk without actually being aggressive. How does he do that?
