Sure Glad We're in Post-Racial America

Sure Glad We're in Post-Racial America

I was looking to see what other signs there were that Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA) was less intelligent than my cat, and I found this depressing reminder that racism is alive and well, from the March 30, 2010 Fox Channel 5 in Atlanta:
ATLANTA - The defense called former DeKalb County officials to the stand Tuesday in an effort to disprove claims of racial discrimination by Vernon Jones.

The former CEO -- along with other county officials -- are charged with trying to replace white managers with black managers during his tenure.

...

Plaintiffs in the 2004 lawsuit accuse Jones of ordering a top subordinate to "dig up dirt" on top white managers because he wanted a "darker administration" to reflect the county's racial makeup.
The federal appeals court has refused to dismiss this suit.

The Perfect Storm of Political Correctness Run Amok

The Perfect Storm of Political Correctness Run Amok

The only thing missing would be if this guy was vegetarian, too! From the October 5, 2009 Daily Mail:

A former judge is facing life in prison after being charged with sexually abusing male inmates in exchange for leniency.

Respected circuit judge Herman Thomas, who was once the Democratic Party’s choice to be the first black federal judge in south Alabama, is accused of bringing inmates to his office and spanking them with a paddle.

His trial for charges of sodomy, kidnapping, sex abuse, extortion, assault and ethics violations is set to begin today.

The 48-year-old insists he is innocent and claims he was trying to mentor the inmates.

I don't think "mentor" is the verb that he wants.

Thomas’s defence lawyer Robert ‘Cowboy Bob’ Clark has branded the accusers ‘lying felons’ who are trying to wreck the career of ‘a prestigious member of the Bar for over 20 years.’

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, a leading civil rights group, has defended Thomas and claims race is behind his prosecution.

Thomas and his attorney blame the charges on politicians who don't like him.

‘There is no doubt that people assisted these inmates in telling these lies on me,’ Thomas said in April.

...

Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said authorities began looking at Thomas after he changed a jail sentence in 2006 for his cousin, former Mobile County school commissioner David Thomas, even though the case was being handled by another judge.

Other cases that Thomas had taken over from other judges without their approval soon surfaced, she said.

Some inmates in those cases described being checked out of the jail for meetings with Thomas in his car or in his private office in the county courthouse.

And there is physical evidence as well!

Jesse Jackson Needs a Real Job

Jesse Jackson Needs a Real Job

Poverty pimp really isn't one. It seems that advertisers often specify in what markets they want their ads to run--and "No Urban Dictate" apparently means that an advertiser doesn't want to run ads on radio or TV stations that primarily target African-Americans as their audience. Jesse Jackson is very upset that BMW has joined a number of other advertisers in specifying this for their ad campaigns.

My first reaction to this is: "What?" I suppose if such stations are focused on a very poor population, then BMW deciding not to advertise on these stations makes sense: they are trying to avoid wasting money selling to an audience that largely is unable to afford BMWs. But there are a lot of middle class and even some rich blacks in the U.S.

Perhaps BMW (and others) have figured out that the stations excluded by "No Urban Dictate" really means, "those stations running hip-hop and generally targeting an audience both black and white that is desperately poor, and suffering from cultural values that mean that it is going to stay that way." In that case, I can see why Jesse Jackson is upset--it would be a reminder that there is a black subculture in America whose biggest enemy isn't white racism, but blacks who revel in cultural self-destruction.

Unpleasant Heterogeneous Encounters

Unpleasant Heterogeneous Encounters

Another PajamasMedia reject, because they already have too many articles about this situation:

Unpleasant Heterogeneous Encounters: Racism & Paranoia

There is a very real disconnect between white and black America—-as the recent arrest of Henry Louis Gates in Cambridge demonstrates. I’ve seen an enormous amount of commentary that refers to Gates screaming at a Cambridge police officer as yet another sign that he is a race hustler. But there’s another explanation—-and one that we white people should think about.

Back when I was a freshman at USC (on a full scholarship—-I grew up just under the poverty line), I drove to school every day. One day, my beat up 1964 Chevrolet station wagon overheated on the way to campus. I pulled off the freeway at Fairfax Boulevard, and into a gas station. For those who don’t know Los Angeles in the 1970s, the Fairfax District was heavily Jewish at the time. The two guys running the station were named Sol and Nathan, and were like something out of a movie. Both had very pronounced New York Jewish accents, right down to mannerisms and expressions that might be considered offensive stereotypes today.

Now, where I lived in Santa Monica was also heavily Jewish. Many of my classmates were Jewish. On Jewish holidays, many of my classes were distinctly short of students. But none of my classmates fit any stereotypes. They sounded like me, they dressed like me—there wasn’t anyone with a stereotyped New York Jewish accent (except when being humorous), and I don’t think any of my classmates was Orthodox or Hassidic. In brief, they were Jewish, but it was an extraordinarily subtle difference—one so subtle that if you weren’t told (and there wasn’t much reason to do so), you wouldn’t know it.

Sol and Nathan persuaded me that all I needed was a new radiator cap, and used some gadget to prove that mine was defective. By the time they had done their song and dance, the engine had cooled—-and of course, the car ran fine—-for about 25 minutes, at which point it overheated again.

That evening, it was apparent that the radiator had a pretty substantial leak in it. My father called up the gas station that had sold me a replacement radiator cap. The defensive manner in which Sol responded suggested that this was not an honest mistake—that they took advantage of a college kid who didn’t know any better. I found myself wondering: had they taken advantage of me because I was a Gentile? I really don’t know-—but because they were so obviously different from me, the thought came into my head. Without that obvious difference, I would simply not have even wondered about it.

This is a majority white country. If you are a white person, and someone mistreats you, the odds are very high that it will be another white person. He might be a car mechanic who tells you that your muffler bearings need repacking, or your Johnson rods are bent. He might be a police officer who gets obnoxious when you get argumentative about a traffic ticket. But because you and the other person are engaged in an unpleasant homogeneous encounter, you don’t generally say to yourself, “It’s because I’m white.” You decide, “He’s a crooked mechanic, out to take advantage of me,” or, “This cop is too full of himself and the power that he has been given.”

Now, imagine that you are black-—in a country that is overwhelmingly white. The odds are quite strong that if you have a really unpleasant situation, it will be with a white person: an unpleasant heterogeneous encounter. It is extremely easy to find yourself asking the same question that I asked myself about Sol and Nathan’s radiator cap scam: is it because you hold my group in contempt? (The closest that most white people get to this same situation are those who live in majority black or Hispanic communities.)

It would not take too many of these unpleasant heterogeneous encounters to create the very negative perception of widespread white racism against black people-—when what is really going on is that we tend to notice unpleasant and ugly encounters with people that aren’t like us—-especially when those encounters are scary, or demeaning. Once an individual has developed that perception—-“this is how a black man gets treated in America”—-each new unpleasant heterogeneous encounter is going to reinforce it.

It also doesn’t help that when Professor Gates was growing up, there really was a lot of racial prejudice directed against blacks. Most of it was unthinking but not particularly hate-filled prejudicial assumptions about blacks, but some of it was really ferocious hate-mongering-—of a caliber with the hate-mongering that you have to listen to Rev. Wright to hear today.

I’m not defending Professor Gates’ behavior. But I would suggest that before we assume that his actions were just another sleazy race hustler like Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton, it might be good to think about easy it is for the disparity in numbers to create false perceptions that everything is about race.

This Is The Sort of Story That Makes My Blood Boil

This Is The Sort of Story That Makes My Blood Boil

The Civilian Gun Self-Defense Blog frequently runs news stories like this one, involving armed robbers who get shot to death by their victims. And not too surprisingly, the robbers are sometimes black, the victims white. What makes my blood boil is when a person who is defending himself and his fellow employees from a highly organized, planned violent armed robbery gets called a racist for doing so. First, the robbery itself, from the May 22, 2009 Oklahoma City Oklahoman:
Jerome Ersland was back at work Thursday filling prescriptions and hoping that by taking the life of a 16-year-old boy two days earlier, he had saved others.
Rubbing an oversized bandage on his left forearm, where he said he was grazed by a robber’s bullet, Ersland related details of what he said was a highly organized hit on the Reliable Discount Pharmacy.
"I just regret anybody would get killed,” Ersland said. "But if I wouldn’t have been here, there would have been three people killed — the other pharmacist and the two techs.”
...

After the pharmacy near SW 59 and Pennsylvania was robbed two years ago, the owner installed new security measures to try to make sure his employees would never again be forced to a back room and pistol-whipped.
"We have a very good security system,” Ersland said, motioning to the magnetic door locks that won’t let anyone in or out of the store without permission. "The door locks, and they (robbers) knew that. They had cased it because they knew exactly what time to hit us when we’d have all of our narcotics out and our money out.”
About 10 minutes before 6 p.m., Ersland said, two robbers wearing ski masks waited for someone to leave the pharmacy and then grabbed the open door and threw down a board to stop the door from closing.
The robbers went in cursing and yelling, ordering employees to give them money and drugs, Ersland said.
Two women who were working behind the counter ran for a back room where they would be safe, but Ersland said he couldn’t run. Ersland said he’s a veteran with disabilities from wounds he received in Operation Desert Storm, wears a cumbersome back brace and just had his latest back surgery six weeks ago.
"All of a sudden, they started shooting,” he said. "They were attempting to kill me, but they didn’t know I had a gun. They said, ‘You’re gonna die.’ That’s when one of them shot at me, and that’s when he got my hand.”
Ersland said he was thrown against a wall, but managed to go for the semiautomatic in his pocket.
"And that’s when I started defending myself,” he said. "The first shot got him in the head, and that slowed him down so I could get my other gun.”
But as one robber hit the floor, Ersland said, a bullet from the other robber whizzed past his ear.
The pharmacist said he then got his second gun from a nearby drawer, a Taurus "Judge.”
After he had the big gun, Ersland said, the second robber ran.
But as he started to chase after the second robber, Ersland said, he looked back to see the 16-year-old he had shot in the head getting up again. Ersland said he then emptied the Kel-Tec .380 into the boy’s chest as he kept going after the second robber.
"I went after the other guy, but he was real fast and I’m crippled,” Ersland said.
Outside the pharmacy, he said he saw what he thought was a third black male in a car with the engine running and reaching for what appeared to be a shotgun.
"I pulled out my ‘Judge’ and pointed it right between his eyes and he floored it,” Ersland said.
This was not a misunderstanding. Gee, what were they planning to do? The ski masks alone would give you a clue.

This was not an unlawful overreaction, like the Korean shopkeeper in Los Angeles some years ago who shot to death a black teenager who shoplifted something from the store. This was a carefully planned robbery by a group of heavily armed teenaged criminals.

And the response of the community?

"I just regret anybody would get killed,” Ersland said. "But if I wouldn’t have been here, there would have been three people killed — the other pharmacist and the two techs.”

He also recalls the angry voices of people who gathered outside the pharmacy Tuesday night, shouting that he was a racist who unnecessarily took a life of the Seeworth Academy charter school student, Antwun Parker.

"There were a lot of black people gathered out there yelling and everything at my boss,” Ersland said.
That makes my blood boil. Does anyone seriously think that a group of similarly determined white robbers would not have received the same response? I keep hoping that American electing a black man to the highest office in the land would stop this lame attempt at turning every criminal into a victim of racism. But apparently not.

The race card has been played so many times where it simply does not apply that I no longer pay any attention to it. And there are probably times when race really is an issue. But this is the type of behavior by some members of the black community that makes me just yawn now when I hear the accusation.

UPDATE: From the May 27, 2009 Oklahoma City Oklahoman:
The charge alleges Ersland shot Antwun Parker, 16, while he was incapacitated and lying on his back. Ersland’s account of the incident doesn’t match the video or the evidence collected at the scene, according to the affidavit written by Oklahoma City Police Detective David Jacobson.

Parker was shot once in the head and five times in the stomach area. The autopsy found Parker was still alive after the head shot and died from the stomach wounds.
The surveillance video does seem to confirm that while the first shot was in self-defense, subsequent shots were not even close to being in self-defense.
