Greetings From Horseshoe Bend

It's finally beginning to feel like spring--almost summer!  From the rear deck.

Rhonda thinks this is a grosbeak pair, dining at the bird feeders we built a few weeks ago.

  1. Clayton, glad you wasn't thinking HOUSE FINCH when your wife made the observation. If Rhonda wants it to be a Pine Grosbeak then that Male on the left is going to have to loose the Sparrow like markings on his chest and replace all those chest feathers with one color, so will the female on the right.

Rhonda is well on her way to nailing down the bird by its beak which is Finch. Next question is which Finch: Grosbeak or a cousin?

Male Pine Grosbeak has a dusky red hue on its head and neck at this time of year as does the House Finch. But them there feathers on the chest is the give away as to which Finch it is.

Rhonda, I'm glad you are getting to know all your neighbors who stop by for a snack, My question to you is: Do you have any Meadow Larks in that Draw that goes down to the valley? You might not see them, but you will hear them if they are there.

  2. I may have this bird confused with another bird that Rhonda thought was a grosbeak.

  3. Oh yes, we have a meadow lark who sings up a storm, reminding us that he owns the property!
